#creepysexyforlife

When Miss Soft Crab went to see Prince play a couple of weeks ago we discussed a little phenomenon we like to call creepy sexy. We tried to figure out why, how, at 54, Prince can not just be so totally awesome, but somehow really attractive. Yes, he writes what is arguably some of the best music of all time. No denying that. And that is a huge part of the appeal, but does that keep others going? Usually no. But what if a guy is creepy sexy? Well that is something else altogether. How can age take away what was never about youth and beauty in the first place? It can't! CREEPYSEXY! If a man is so overtly sexual it would usually be sickeningly repulsive, but somehow is hot, can anyone take that away? NO! CREEPYSEXY!

J: So mate, I think it's time we talked about creepy sexy. I did see Prince again last night, after all.

K:  You're right, it's time. OK, lets workshop this. Mate, what do we mean by creepy sexy.

J Great question. I guess it means someone who is kind of overtly sexual in a creepy, yet somehow awesome way. Not just someone is both a hunk but also a bit creepy (see: Christian Bale, Casey Affleck).

K:  Yes, creepy sexy is more than just a hunk who is a little creepy. In fact, creepy sexy people typically aren't hunks. That's what's so surprising about them.

J Exactly. Like, for example Prince. Look I'm just going to come out and say it. I want to talk about Prince a lot, but I'm happy to talk about other people too. OK, so Prince, now he is not your typical hunk. And usually I would find overt sexuality pretty repulsive but Prince is so creepily overt it is kind of irresistible.

K:  Seeing Prince has brought this creepy sexy issue to the fore for me too. Here are some feelings I have been feeling since seeing him: Revulsion. Desire. Admiration. Phwoar.

J YES! YES! I feel exactly the same. But actually, when it comes to revulsion I mostly think that is something I should feel but absolutely do not.

K:  Mate, is Prince in your top ten?

J Kind of. Like, in a way he is the number one. ICHI BAN! But not in a real way. It's hard to explain. He is so awesome. Like a beautiful angel. But mate, we are getting off topic. We are talking creepy sexy. Not top 10. Do you want to tell the people who else you think is creepy sexy?

K:  Sure, I'll tell the people who else is creepy sexy. I think Bonnie Prince Billy is creepy sexy. He is extremely, extremely sexual and creepual. Don't you think?

J Let's see what the readers think?

Is this man creepy sexy?

K:  Oh come on mate. Now I look like the creepy one.

J Yeah, that wasn't fair. This is what he normally looks like:

He's creepy something
K:  Oh for goodness sake. Stop it at once!

Look, I know J doesn't agree with me on this one, but BPB walks a similar path to Prince. He makes super great music. That music is overtly sexual. On paper, he shouldn't be attractive at all but he is, readers. He is!
Just like Prince!

J OK, here is a picture of BPB singing his very beautiful music:

And it is true, his music is awesome and it is overtly sexual, and far from making it and him repulsive it makes them both attractive. I guess the problem is, for me, next to Prince, nothing compares.

K:  Well yes, there is that. But like you said, this chat is about creepy sexy, not just Prince, and we owe it to all the other creepy sexy babies out there to give them some time to shine.

OK, this next one is going to do nothing to dissuade the readers from thinking that I am indeed creepy. But I have to say what I feel, and I feel that this man is creepy sexy.

J:  Look... Gee... Um... Look...

I am not going to get into a debate about the attractiveness of RdN but, creepy sexy? You are right, this definitely says more about you then him. Go on defend it.

K:  Well, OK, sure, I will do that. I  mean, I could if I wanted to. Any time. Easily! I just don't feel like it right now.

Jokies! You really must see Godfather part 2 to understand creepy sexy RdN.

K:  Now cop a look at that, would you? Obviously he is a handsome devil. But when I first saw him, around the Cape Fear era, he was less handsome and just more out and out compelling. Like you know you should be repelled or something, but you're not mate. You're not.

J Sure. I understand what you are saying. Creepy compelling sexy. I can dig it. And definitely I would say de Niro has that.

Look I think that Bobby and Bonnie both have special creepy hotness, but for me they are not in the same category as Prince. And I don't just mean he is so far above them (though I think that too). What I mean is that they actually inhabit different categories of special hunk.

K:  Interesting. Go on.

J So either a) creepy sexy means different things to you and me; or b) you crazy girlfriend!

K:  Both are possible. Is there anyone else you think is creepy sexy?

J Ummmmm. Ummmmmmmmmmmm. Well....

K:  Mate, is this post not really about creepy sexy at all?

J Shit!

Shit. I thought it was. I thought it was about creepy sexy. But it's just about Prince. I love him. I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

K:  Shit mate, you really love him. It's cool. You wanna show the readers some more pictures?

J I thought you'd never ask!

But seriously folks. I want to say one more thing about why Prince is so awesome. Two. Two things.
Have you seen the way he dances? HOT

K:  You're right. it's really hot.

J:  Also, he always seems to be having such an awesome time. And everything is kind of a joke. He is not earnest about all that sexuality. HOT!

K:  Totally good point. Dude is always having a great time. And  that's something that you certainly can't say about BPB and RdN. Creepy sexy though they are.

J:  Exactly! (To the first point, second point remains unconfirmed.) And that is why Prince is KING OF CREEPY SEXY! #creepysexyforlife

West End Festival 2012

One of Glasgow's biggest festivals returns again this year, from Friday the 1st June to Sunday 24th June the party begins for the West End Festival 2012. A festival that started out small in 1996 has now grown to major festival, much of it self produced by the talented and creative individuals that live in Glasgow.

The event which started off as a one week affair which featured a small theatre event and paintings on railings amongst other things has steadily grown into quite the festival. Now running over three weeks and with a huge variety of events on offer, last year boasted over 650 including a series of 23 music chamber concerts. What's more many of them are free.

This years event looks to be bigger than ever featuring a whole array of different events to choose from. Including music from the likes of James Grant, Glasgow's electronic street party The Electric Frog, Comedy from the Stand, Theatre showcases plus much much more. There really is something for everyone. Download the full brochure from the festival website here.

Crooks & Castles

Another brand that has just landed at Fat Buddha Store are US streetwear giants Crooks & Castles. The brand began life back in 2002 by Dennis Calvero and Robert Panlilio to bring a different element to the realm of streetwear. Now in 2012 the brand is as big as ever. The brands Air Gun print has become an icon image for the label, and still remains a constant best seller. The print is shown below.
There is also a small promo video for French Montana for Crooks & Castles below which goes behind the scenes.

We look forward to seeing the brand do well at Fat Buddha Store, and are glad to welcome them onboard.

Music Monday - Blink 182

Today is my first Monday shift in what feels like forever. I've noticed that Monday's blog posts are usually reserved for Music Monday and today will be no different in that respect. However it will be different in the respect that today will be all about my favourite band Blink 182.
For me hearing blink-182 changed everything about me, it changed my musical taste, the clothes I wore and the friends I had. I think for a lot of people my age they done the same. The band started out as a 3 piece in California with original drummer Scott Raynor. They released two albums (Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch) and a few EP's (Flyswatter and Buddha) with Scott. Their big break came when the recorded their first album wit current drummer Travis Barker. Enema of the State changed how the band were perceived and burst into the mainstream.

The band were best friends who loved making music as could be seen from Mark Hoppus' and Tom DeLonges' stage presence and constant jokes. The went on to release a few more major albums before they went on an indefinite hiatus.
A air plane crash that nearly cost Travis his life brought the band back together and since their hiatus have released another album. As the band mature and age so does their musical style. I for one still love them to this day and I'm proud to say that without blink-182 I would not have anywhere near the musical taste or lifestyle I do today.

Going out - Highlife 2nd Birthday

This month saw friend of the store Auntie Flo release his debut album Future Rhythm Machine.  Auntie Flo is a Glasgow based producer/DJ who holds residencies at Glasgow's Sub Club with Highlife and London's Plastic People with Huntleys and Palmers.  Auntie Flo is a real talent to look out for in 2012 and we are very excited for the release of his debut album Future Rhythm Machine. This year is really looking to be a good one for him and we recommend if you get the chance to go and catch him, he will be playing at several festivals throughout the summer from Lovebox in London to Dimensions Festival in Croatia.

This Sunday Highlife will be taking over the Subclub once more to celebrate their second birthday this time with a special Afro Noise theme. Joining Auntie Flo and Esa in the celebrations will be William Bennet with his Cut Hands project. Cut Hands creates a unique sound unlike any you have ever heard beforeusing original African percussion instruments as the source. According to the event page it may "make you feel physically sick, it will probably make you feel alive and it will almost certainly be like nothing you've heard before" sounds exciting!

There will also be cake, so get down and celebrate Highlife style. Standard.

Summer Festivals

As the sun has decided to come out for a bit over here in Scotland it has really started getting us hyped about the up and coming summer festival season. It's only about two weeks till Scotland plays host to it's first festival Rockness! This being the case we thought we would look into a few other festivals held further afield that we are pretty hyped about.

1. Sonar - Barcelona 14th, 15th and 16th June - Since 1994 Sonar has been celebrating advanced music and media throughout various venues in Barcelona. It is a real pioneering festival with an artistic programme that is divided between activities at Sonar by Day which showcases new talent and live shows and Sonar by Night which presents the headline artists. Sonar by Day is held right in the centre of Barcelona while Sonar by Night is held on the outskirts in a massive airport hangover. Having been there myself I can confidently say it was one of the best festival experiences of my life, and its full of Glaswegians. This year some of the acts include New Order, Richie Hawtin,  James Murphy plus many many more. During Sonar Barcelona is party central with different parties put on all over the place such as the Mobilee rooftop -

2. Bloc - London 6th and 7th July - Now in its sixth year, Bloc a festival with a dedication to electronic music will be held in a new venue at London Pleasure Gardens. It was originally held at Butlin's Holiday resort in Minehead. This years festival looks bigger than ever as they are also using the MS Stubniz as a venue. The Motor Ship Stubniz is a deep sea fishing vessel that belonged to the German Democratic Republic before the collapse of communism. It was been transformed by a group of forward thinking artists into a moving platform for the sonic and visual arts, perfect for Bloc. The line up includes Snoop Doff, Gary Numan, Villalobos plus many more.

3. Dimensions - Croatia 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th September - Dimensions is a brand new festival created by the same team behind Croatia's Outlook festival. It is an underground music festival held in the iconic Fort Punta Christo, it also boasts boat and beach parties. In the beautiful surroundings of Croatia this looks to be something very special indeed. The line up includes Carl Craig, Little Dragon, Moodymann plus lots more.

Check out our new range of Ray Ban sunglasses to keep it fresh while you are partying this summer online here.

Palladium Boots

In store now we have Palladium Boots, the classic French hat was founded in 1920 as a company that started out creating specialist tires for air crafts. Their advanced tires that were made by layering canvas bands undrneath vulcanised rubber soon ende up on the majority of Europe's aircrafts.

In 1947 Palladium put this same idea and expertise that was used in their tires to footwear and the resukt was the Pampa Boot. A boot that was renowned for its comfort, funcionality and durability so much so that it was adopted by the French Foreign legion.

Check out their series of Urban Exploration videos - This video sees the brands front man Pharrell Williams explore Tokyo after the tragedy of the 3/11 earthquake.

Cut to modern day and the comfortable, durable and funcional qualities that the brand stands for are still there with a more modern style and they look great. These qualities make them the ideal choice of footwear for the explorer in all of us, that still like to maintain style of course.

Check out our full range of Palladium here.

Music Monday - Notorious B.I.G.

With today's date, May 21st being the birthday of now deceased hip-hop legend the Notorious B.I.G. (also known as Biggie Smalls) we thought it only right we dedicate this weeks Music Monday to him.

Biggie who was raised in Brooklyn, New York became a keyplayer in the East Coast hi-hop scene after the release of his debut album Ready to Die in 1994. His success and ability as a rapper and lyricist helped put him and New York back on the map for hip-hop in a time when it consisted mainly of East coast artists.

This led on to a West Coast/East Coast divide and a feud between the rappers from the major record labels Death Row and Bad Boy Records, the former included Tupac Shakur a former associate of Biggie's. This feud grew to such an extent that both Tupac Shakur and Biggie were murdered in drive by shootings a few years apart from each other (1995 and 1997). Biggie's murder case to this day still remains unsolved.

Hailed as one of the greatest rapper of all time, Biggie's ability to flow as a lyricist and performer has resulted in him being championed as the saviour of East Coast Hip Hop and to this day he his music lives on. Happy Birthday Biggie!
